Service Description
Starting secondary school is a big step. For some young people, it feels exciting. For others, it feels daunting. Most are carrying a mixture of both. There are new teachers, new routines, new friendships, bigger buildings, greater independence, and a growing sense that childhood is beginning to change. The truth is, nobody has secondary school completely figured out. Figuring Things Out… Starting Secondary School is a four-week online group for young people preparing to make the move from primary to secondary school. This is not counselling or group therapy. It is a supportive space where young people can explore some of the questions, worries, hopes, and challenges that often come with this important transition. Together, we will think about topics such as friendships, confidence, belonging, managing worries, asking for help, coping with change, and making sense of who we are becoming as we move towards adolescence. There is no pressure to share personal experiences. Some young people may enjoy joining discussions, while others may prefer to listen and take things in at their own pace. Both are welcome. The programme is delivered online in a small closed group. Participants remain with the same group throughout the four weeks, allowing familiarity, trust, and confidence to develop over time. Starting secondary school is about far more than timetables and classrooms. Alongside the practical changes come questions about friendships, identity, confidence, belonging, independence, and finding your place in a new environment. This group offers young people a safe space to pause, reflect, ask questions, and realise they are not the only one figuring things out. A free First Steps Call is available for parents and carers who would like to find out more or discuss whether the programme feels like the right fit for their child. Simply book through the Book Online page on the website. If the advertised dates or times do not work for your family, please join the waiting list or get in touch. If there is enough interest, additional groups may be offered at alternative times or on different days. For young people who may benefit from more personalised support, individual counselling sessions are also available separately. Future in-person groups may also be offered if there is sufficient interest.
